Palabras claves: sellante de resina, sellante de vidrio ionómero, lesión de caries, primer molar permanente, ensayo clínico controlado, tratamiento mínimamente invasivo./ABSTRACT: A randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) was performed in children aged 6 to 12 years attending the Center of Dental Clinics of the University of Talca in Talca. The treatment of different ICDAS II code 3 lesions in permanent first molars was carried out with sealants based on two types of materials. A total of 151 lesions were randomly divided into two groups, one with resin sealants and the other with glass ionomer sealants. The study subjects were assessed clinically and radiographically at time "0" (baseline) and at 24-month follow-up. The progression of caries lesions, the persistence and integrity of the material, the clinical success and the association of sealants with sociodemographic variables. At follow-up at 24 months, the results showed that there were clinical and radiographic progression of caries lesions and there were no significant difference between both materials. The association between caries progression, clinical success and sociodemographic variables was not seen. Therefore, when the resin and glass ionomer sealant were compared. It seems that both materials are equally effective in the detection of caries lesions.
