In the context to the global contingent problems of climate change and the unfavorable implications that agriculture brings, which directly affect the yield of crops, it is necessary to develop genotypes that are tolerant to these conditions; where the anatomical characteristics of plants are key indicators of adaptation to environmental stress conditions. The objective of this study was to recognize certain morpho-anatomical and physiological characters that could be related to tolerance to water stress, in five genotypes of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The experiment was performed out at the INIA Quilamapu experimental station, in Santa Rosa, Chillán, Chile (36 ° 32 'S, 71 ° 55' W), in the 2017 season, under field irrigation conditions. The variables evaluated in this study were the flag leaf area, stomatal density (SD), stoma length and width (LE and AE, respectively) as well as the length / width ratio (L / A) for both the adaxial side as abaxial of the flag leaf. Histological sections were also made, with which the equatorial and longitudinal diameter of the protoxylema and metaxylema ducts were determined. In parallel, physiological measurements of relative water content, pigments, gases and fluorescence were performed, with which the morpho-anatomical variables were correlated. The results show that there were significant differences between the genotypes in the stomatal density of the abaxial side, as well as that there is greater stomatal density on the adaxial side in all the genotypes. In turn, there was a tendency for genotypes classified as tolerant to water stress to have xylem elements of smaller diameter. Moreover, positive correlations were observed between the adaxial stomatal density and the chlorophyll content; between the relation clfa / clfb with the size of the xylem elements and between the abaxial stomatal density with maximum fluorescence performance in dark conditions (Fm).
