Abstract: El Maqui, Aristotelia chilensis (Mol.) Stunz., is an outstanding species because of its fruit, considered to be a functional food due to its high antioxidant capacity and composition of minerals. Therefore, this fruit is highly valued in the market. However, the berries are collected from natural populations, which implies a low supply of this raw material. The genotypes selected to establish commercial crops require mass propagation, for example, through in vitro propagation. The growth of in vitro explants depends on the light, specifically on the wavelength (nm) and intensity (W/m2/nm). This research aimed to evaluate the effect of different intensities and wavelengths such as red, blue and white, LED and fluorescent, on the growth of explants of four maqui clones. After four weeks explants were evaluated for height (mm), weight (mg) and number of nodes . The quality of the light was measured with a spectroradiometer. Explants generally grew better under illumination of white LED spotlights than under red and blue ones, especially when blue light was predominating When comparing white LED with fluorescent tubes results were genotype dependent. White LED light only reached between 5 and 6% of the maximum intensity compared with the red-blue LED spots, while fluorescent tubes emitted 28%. High levels of light intensity may cause saturation of the photosystem, with lower growth of the explants.
