Representaciones sociales de salud bucal en la población rural de América Latina: revisión narrativa

Abstract

A pesar de los considerables avances científicos en la comprensión de la patogenia y las causas de las enfermedades bucodentales, la carga mundial de patologías orales ha persistido. La mayoría de las afecciones de salud bucal se pueden prevenir en gran medida y se pueden tratar en sus primeras etapas. Históricamente ha existido una brecha reconocida de salud bucodental entre la población rural y urbana. Las representaciones son conocimientos que se construyen a partir de las experiencias, informaciones y modelos de pensamientos que los individuos reciben y transmiten a través de la tradición, educación y comunicación social. Las representaciones sobre salud bucodental de la población rural revelan que las condiciones objetivas de la vida las determinan: La enfermedad bucal, se supone una experiencia inevitable, la extracción dental es considerada un “tratamiento” efectivo contra el dolor, la búsqueda de atención profesional se ve motivada por factores estéticos y el miedo o ansiedad relacionados con el tratamiento dental resulta en un comportamiento de evitación a los servicios odontológicos. Los resultados obtenidos en esta revisión pueden considerarse demostrativos de los conocimientos y tácticas que los pobladores rurales han construido frente al proceso salud-enfermedad bucal según su contexto de vida. La comprensión de las representaciones sociales, propias de los habitantes del campo, puede llevar a planificar acciones mejor focalizadas, más humanas, culturalmente competentes y así realmente efectivas. // ABSTRACT: Despite considerable scientific advances in understanding the pathogenesis and causes of oral disease, the global burden of oral disease has persisted. Most oral health conditions are largely preventable and treatable in their early stages. Historically, there has been a recognized oral health gap between the rural and urban population. Representations are knowledge that is built from the experiences, information, and thought patterns that individuals receive and transmit through tradition, education, and social communication. Representations on oral health of the rural population reveal that the objective conditions of life determine them: Oral disease is an inevitable experience, dental extraction is considered an effective "treatment" against pain, the search for professional care is It is motivated by aesthetic factors and fear or anxiety related to dental treatment results in avoidance behavior towards dental services. The results obtained in this review can be considered as demonstrative of the knowledge and tactics that rural people have built against the oral health-disease process according to their life context. The understanding of the social representations, typical of the inhabitants of the countryside, can lead to planning actions that are better focused, more humane, culturally competent and thus truly effective.
