The main pest problem for seed production of maize is the corn earworm (Heliothis zea), which feeds from grains of the ears decreasing yield. This pest is managed by spraying pyrethroid insecticides at specific times during bloom, often without considering the biology of the pest. Another important aspect for the management of this pest is the use of parental lines genetically modified with the gene of proteins with insecticidal effect, such as the endotoxins of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt) which show a partial suppression effect on H. zea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative importance of various variables on the damage caused by H. zea on corn ears, both with and without Bt technology. In particular, the number of eggs and larvae found through monitoring and the flowering percentage in the fields with pyrethroid sprays were associated with the percentage of ears with damage at harvest. The statistical method used was a multiple linear regression, which showed that the number of eggs was the only variable with a significant increase on the percentage of damaged ears before harvest, regardless of Bt technology.
