Abstract: El Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis (Mol.) Stuntz) is medical bush native from Chile and Argentina. The leaves and fruits been used traditionally by Mapuche people for medicinal purposes. For their outsatanding antioxidant capacity maqui fruits could be used as raw material for the nutraceutical, pharmacologic and cosmetic industries. Today the recollection is the only source of market’s supply, resulting in an heterogeneous and low quality product. The study of cultivated clones of maqui and the quantification of chemical compounds in leaves of plants coming from different origins will indicate whether the characteristics are determined genetically or by environmental effects. Clones of eight different origins of Maqui, were cultivate in the experimental station Panguilemo of Universidad de Talca with Mediterraneam climate. The plant height was measured weekly and the number and position of bunds monthly. The phenolic content was quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and antioxidant capacity by (DPPH) in leaf extracts during the first growing season. The plants showed no significant differences among origins in phenolic concentration and antioxidant capacity of leaf extracts with mean values of 9.2 mg g-1 equivalent of gallic acid and 53.4 ppm IC50, respectively. The correlation between the phenol content and antioxidant capacity was low (R2= 0,536). The plants from the southerm regions grew significantly higher during the first season (72.3 cm) compared with those from the central zome (39.8 cm). Most of the origins have a bushy growth habit, but two of were characterize by generating similar number of buds in the upper zone. Key words: Aristotelia chilensis, antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, height, clon, growth habit.
