Palabras claves: Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz, inducción y diferenciación floral, desarrollo floral, meristema apical del brote./ABSTRACT: This study evaluates the induction and early stages of floral development in lateral buds of maqui (Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz) by using histological techniques. Aristotelia chilensis, a wintergreen species native to Chile and Argentina, grows in open areas, but also in the Andean-Patagonian forests. Its fruits are highly rich in antioxidants. However, the fruit supply from wild collection unsustainable is heterogeneous and unstable. For this research three clones of maqui were cultivated in an assay outside in the Estación Experimental Panguilemo, Universidad de Talca (35°36'S, 71°58'E). The clones were from three different provenances, namely Romeral-VII region (clone 212), Mulchen-Quillaco-VIIIregion (clone 806) and Alerce Andino-X region (clone 418). Lateral buds of young growing shoots were collected on a weekly during the spring of 2012, starting from full bloom (80%) for 15 consecutive weeks. At the end of sampling, histological cuts of all collected buds have been analyzed using two techniques: 1) the conventional histological technique using a rotation microtome, and 2) the tissue freezing technique performed with a cryostat to facilitate observation of the stage of shoot apical meristem (SAM), in order to determine the time of floral induction and differentiate the stages of floral development. Significant results were found for the moment of transition from vegetative to reproductive stage (stage 1 to 2) which appeared on November 9th for most of the clones (35/* 21 DAFB). For the transition from the formation of the domed meristem to differentiated meristem (stage 2 to 3, both reproductive stages of floral development), no significant differences arose on December 7th (63/*49 DAFB) except for the influence on one of the clones, characterized as the latest (Alerce Andino). However, it was observed that most of the clones were in stage 3 at the end of the evaluation period (December 28th, 84/*70 DAFB). Differences in floral development of clones showed a time difference of the full bloom of about two weeks between the earliest clone and intermediate and latest clones. The earliest and intermediate clones started stage 2 simultaneously while the latest clone was delayed by one week. The start of the stage 3 varied by a period of two weeks between the earliest and intermediate clones and the latest clone which did not accomplish the respective stage. In addition, internal and external factors were associated with the development stages (SAM) in order to contribute hypotheses to the study.
