As the problem progresses, we begin to find strategies to mitigate and achieve sustainable production of wheat grain under these conditions. Thus, breeding programs take a vital role in finding appropriate genotypes to develop in conditions of water deficit. For this reason, the objective of this study is to identify the different yield response of wheat genotypes against contrasting water conditions. The trial was conducted during the 2011-2012 season on two INIA experimental stations. The first corresponds to Santa Rosa station (36° 31’ 34" S; 71° 54’ 40" W; 220 m.a.s.l.) Regional Research Center Quilamapu, Chillan, Chile. The second station is Cauquenes (35º 58’ 11" S; 72º 17’ 5” W; 162 m.a.s.l.), which belongs to Regional Research Center Raihuén, commune of Villa Alegre, Chile. The material tested was 386 genotypes of wheat (Triticum spp.) which were distributed in plots under different water management, establishing four handlings of moisture, one without stress (SE), with sub optimal conditions (SO) and moderate stress (M) in Santa Rosa, while severe stress (S) was established in Cauquenes.. We performed an analysis of yield stability, wherein the response identified genotypes (through its slope) established the four environments, of performance based on the environment index, obtaining a group of 14 genotypes with high and low slope of which the most prominent varieties were the variety 1, 2 and 237, witch a slope of 1,34, 0,62 and 1,11 respectively. Moreover, calculated delta between yields, with the aim to quantify the percentage difference between SE and S. Genotypes were selected which belong to 25% higher yield in SE. Of this genotypes, 12 appeared within which showed the lowest lose percentages being variety 1 and 2 (51,6 and 70,3%, respectively) genotypes more highlighted, as are also from the stability analysis method performance, assessing the response of genotypes to different water regimens by the environmental index and delta. It can be concluded that both methods should be considered in together to achieve the selection of genotypes tolerant to water stress.Palabras claves: Trigo, Sequía, Índice ambiental, mejoramiento genético
