/ABSTRACT: A study was conducted in order to characterize the effect of regulated deficit irrigation on gas exchange of four isohydrics and anisohydrics grapevines cultivars (Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot) to reduce the use of water irrigation. The experiment was conducted on a vineyard located in the Panguilemo Experimental Station belong to the Vine and Wine Technological Center of the University of Talca, Maule Valley, Talca, VII Region, Chile (35° 22.2' S, 71° 35.39' W, 121 m.a.s.l), during 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 growing seasons. Measurements of gas exchange at leaf level, such as stomatal conductance (gs), net CO2 assimilation (A) and transpiration (E), together with measurements of stem water potential (s), leaf water potential (l) and intrinsic water use efficiency (A/gs) were performed. The results show that plant water status measurement on Chardonnay and Merlot was affected by applying a water restriction of -1.19 and -0.96 MPa, respectively, with high levels of intrinsic water use efficiency (81.28 and 91.45 μmol CO2 mol H2O−1). In Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir was observed a similar tendency with values of -0.87 and -0.93 MPa, with lower levels of intrinsic water use efficiency of 79.69 and 70.48 μmol CO2 mol H2O−1, however, Pinot Noir decreases l in relation to the level of water restriction. Gas exchange variables ranged between 4.96 and 15.90 μmol m-2 s-1 for A, between 0.09 and 0.50 mol m-2 s-1 for gs and between 3.27 and 10.97 mmol m-2 s-1 for E.The results of this study show that, under water restriction, the four cultivars significantly increase its intrinsic water use efficiency as adjustment to water condition, significantly reducing the gas exchange. In relation to the cultivars studied, Chardonnay and Merlot could be characterized in this research as anisohydrics cultivars, Pinot Noir as near-anisohydric cultivar and Sauvignon Blanc as isohydric cultivar. Keywords: Water potential, gas exchange, isohydric, anisohydric, water use efficiency.
